Based on the classic Staunton design, these unique pieces are beautifully carved, stained and then polished by our master craftsmen. Crafted from the highest quality, hand-selected boxwood, the red and black chessmen are classically ‘Staunton’ in their design – based on the iconic 19th century pieces that we all know and love – but with a splash of unique flair all their own.

Quite possibly the most impressive feature is the simply breathtaking red and black coloured finish on the pieces, which just mixes up the somewhat rigid colour schemes of traditional chess sets in a way that adds a bit of contemporary style and versatility. If you live in a more modern, streamlined space that wouldn’t allow for the deep, rich wood tones typically found in Staunton sets, then this is a simply perfect solution.

All the pieces are perfectly weighted and with the added detail to their collars and smooth shanks, they are a pleasure to handle. The imposing king stands tall and proud at 3.75 inches including his ornamental finial with the substantial knight maintaining a focused stare in true Staunton style.

As these pieces have broader bases than normal, a 21.7 inch would be most suited to accommodate them. We have matched them in this set with a stunning black and maple board from Spain. It is as though the board and pieces were made for each other.
The Red and Black Broadbase Chess Men are also available without the board. But either way, we think they are going to be one of our best sellers.

The chess board in this set has been expertly crafted by Rechapados Ferrer in Spain using precision laser cutting techniques and stunning wooden veneers combined with expert lacquering and finishing. The underside of the board is finished in a satin veneer that is a different colour from the playing surface of the board. The veneers used for the underside may vary in colour from batch to batch.
